Everyone Starts. Few Follow Through.

Follow-through is rarely a willpower problem. It is a system problem. The Follow-Through Pack turns commitment devices into printable sheets you can fill in.

The work is done. It has been done for three weeks, and the only thing left is to send it. You have not sent it.

You understand exactly why. You have understood it several times now, in some detail, and the understanding has changed nothing.

That is not a knowledge problem. A fourth explanation will not do what the first three did not.

Why do so many things get started and never finished?

Everyone starts. That part is cheap, and it gets all the encouragement. The gym membership, the course, the draft. The follow-through is where it dies, and it dies quietly, usually at the very end: the finished thing that never gets sent.

It is rarely a willpower problem. If it were, understanding would help. But you understand the thing perfectly and still do not do it. The missing piece was never information.

Economists have a name for the pattern: present bias. In the calm hour you intend to do the thing. In the live moment you want something else, and the live moment is the one holding the controls. The version of you at 4pm does not care what the version of you at 9am decided.

What is a commitment device?

The fix is not more resolve. Resolve is the thing you have already tested and lost. The fix is an arrangement you make now, while thinking clearly, that restricts what you can choose later. That is what a commitment device is.

The decision gets made in the calm hour and executed in the live moment, so the live moment never gets a vote. Odysseus did not resist the sirens. He was tied to a mast by people with instructions.

The idea is old and well tested. Strotz formalised it in 1956, Schelling in 1960, Elster in 1979, Ariely and Wertenbroch in 2002. The research is settled. The open question is how you build one without it collapsing in week three.

What is in the Follow-Through Pack?

The Follow-Through Pack is five printable sheets that turn that idea into paper you can fill in. It runs on the three ways a device actually works: remove the option, raise the cost, or add a witness.

  • The reference card explains each mechanism, what it is strongest at, and the exact conditions where it collapses.
  • The design worksheet builds one device for one commitment. You write the finish line before the work can move it, and name the exact moment you will break it, while you are still honest.
  • The contract names the commitment, the deadline, the artifact, the stake, where the stake goes if you miss, and what the witness is authorized to do. Two signatures.
  • The failure mode namer lists seven named ways this breaks, with the counter for each, filled in before you need it.
  • The witness sheet is a brief for the person who signs: four scripted questions and an eight week log.

Every sheet is a standalone HTML file. Open it in any browser, press print. No app, no account, nothing that phones home. Print as many as you want, forever.

How do you actually use it?

One commitment. Not the four you would like to fix. Pick the one that has been sitting the longest, because that is where trying harder already failed.

Fill in the design worksheet and the failure mode sheet on the same day. Then write the contract and ask a person to sign it. That asking is the first real test, and it is where most people stop, because it makes the commitment real. Pick the person who will enjoy collecting, not the person who will understand. Understanding is the failure mode.

Hand over the witness sheet and put the first check-in in both calendars. A witness with no scheduled time is just a person who knows about your plan.

Then the device runs. Week two is mostly you wanting to renegotiate and not doing it. If you miss, the stake moves, same day, no discussion. A week later, ask what would have had to be different. The answer is the design brief for the next device. It is almost never more discipline. Usually it is a fake stake, a witness who will not enforce, or a deadline with no time of day on it.

What is the Follow-Through Pack not?

It is not a productivity system. There is no daily habit to maintain and no streak to break. A device is built once, runs on its own, and ends when the commitment is met.

It is not a way to make yourself want something. It assumes you will not want it. That assumption is the whole design.

It is not legal or financial advice. The contract is a personal agreement between two people. Keep the stake small enough that losing it changes nothing important, and never use money you cannot afford to lose outright.

Frequently asked questions

How does a commitment device work?

A commitment device works by taking the choice away from your future self. You make the decision in advance, while thinking clearly, and arrange things so the live moment cannot undo it.

What is the difference between a commitment device and a productivity system?

A productivity system is something you maintain. A commitment device is something you build once. It runs on its own, ends when the commitment is met, and asks nothing of you daily. If it needs a streak to hold, it is not a device, it is a habit with extra steps.

What happens when a commitment device fails?

The stake moves, same day, no discussion. A week later, ask what would have had to be different. The answer is usually a fake stake, a witness who would not enforce, or a deadline with no time of day. Fix that one thing and build the next device.

You will still not want to do the thing at four in the afternoon. That stops mattering. The doing no longer depends on wanting, and that was the only part that was ever really failing.

If you have a finished thing sitting unsent, that is the one to pick. The pack is $14, prints in an evening, and there is nothing to maintain, no app, no account, and no subscription to cancel later.
